DNS Failover with a Template

Overview

DNS Templates can be created in Constellix that allow you to reuse records that share the same configurations across multiple domains. This guide walks you through the process of creating a template for a record with Failover configured.

Common Use Cases for Using Templates With Failover

The most common reason for using templates for failover configurations is to save time and to cut back on potential errors from entering a large volume of records for one or more domains manually.

Prerequisites

  • A domain has already been added to your Constellix account
  • You have already created the template that needs Failover
  • You have a record configured with Failover

Note: If you need help creating a template, we have a guide that walks you through the steps. If you have not yet configured Failover for any records, visit our DNS Failover tutorial before beginning this process.

1: Log into Constellix and Choose Templates

Log into Constellix. Once in the dashboard, select Managed DNS in the left-hand sidebar menu. This will display a drop-down list of DNS configuration options. To get started, select the option for Templates.

2. Select Your Template

Click on the name of the template you want to configure.

3. Choose Record for Failover Template

If you need to make any changes to the record you are using for the template, tick the checkbox beside the appropriate record name, then click the pencil icon to make adjustments. Press the green Save and Close button to continue.

Note: In this example, we will create a template based on an existing A record that was previously configured with Failover.

4. Apply Template

Once you have made any necessary changes to your record template, tick the box beside the record name and then click the green Apply Template button on the right-hand side of the screen.

5. Select Domains

In the next pop-up window, select the domain(s) you want to assign your template to and click Apply.

Note: If any templates were previously applied to the domain(s) selected, they will be replaced by the new one. If this template was applied to a different domain but is not checked in this step, it will be removed.

After selecting Apply, you will see a message in the window confirming the template has been applied to the selected domains. Tap Close to finish. To exit the Template, go back to the main Constellix dashboard.

Note: If you chose to edit an existing record for your template and that record had GeoIP or GTD services enabled, you will be prompted to enable the same services for the domains you selected. Click the green Yes button if you want to apply the same services to the selected domains.

If you do not want this, you will need to disable the settings in the Template. This can be done by pressing No in the above screenshot and then closing out the Apply window. In the Template record area, click on the green Advanced Settings button on the upper right side of the screen and choose Disable GeoIP Services, and then repeat step 5.

If there are no errors in your DNS configuration, the process is complete and your Failover template is ready to use. If an error was detected, a message will pop up with details about the issue that is preventing the template from being applied to your chosen domain.

Note: In order for your Failover template to take effect, you must review and apply changes.
